To Stay in France for a longer period
Application for a resident’s permit
You can apply for a resident permit if you wish to stay in France for a longer period than allows your long stay visa.
People coming from the EU, the European Economic Area or Switzerland don’t need a visa to enter in France
You could potentially apply for:
- A temporary resident’s permit (1 year duration – renewable)
- “Skills” resident’s permit (3 years duration – renewable)
- Resident’s permit (10 years duration – renewable)
- Retired resident’s permit ( 10 years duration – renewable)
In general, to submit this application, you will need to bring the following documents
- Visa
- If your are single: a birth certificate, if you are married or have children: a family record book

- Proof of resources
- If you are visiting someone,
If any of your documents is not written in French, you will need to make it translated in French by an official translator/translation agency (http://www.ceticap.com/)
An application should be submitted to the Police Prefecture within 2 months after your arrival in France. In some cases, an application can take longer than you expected (depending on the documents they will need and what you can submit). I would advise you to contact them as soon as you can to make sure that your application is done within 2 months after your arrival.
